'Breadcrumbs started as demos of songs I was writing in 2020, which gradually turned into this album I wanted people to hear. It was all recorded at home, on the cheap, so it's fair to say there are a few rough edges and raw performances... It's been sidelined and abandoned multiple times as I got stuck into other projects, musically and otherwise, but I've always felt there was something about it, and the journey through the songs, that was worth waiting for the right time to finish it. That came in Spring '25, finding myself in a more settled frame of mind, somehow in a home all of my own, able to take stock of where I was, unpack some boxes, and start to add the finishing touches.
A theme I noticed in the lyrics was an idea of keeping grounded, rejecting the doomscrolled version of reality I find it so easy to fall into (yet so hard to make sense of) and focusing on things within my control in a world seemingly completely out of it. As much as some of the songs are just reflections of the chaos, 'Breadcrumbs' is me reminding myself of that route back out of the woods.' - Joel, December 2025
